kindergarten newsletter Feb.2-6

Kindergarten Newsletter
February 2-6th
Happy February everyone!  The Student Council will be collecting Pennies for Patients until the 11th.  Please send in your extra pennies of you can spare!

Here’s what’s coming up for this week…

·        PARENT HOMEWORK!!!!!!!!  We hope that you are all diligently on your Parent Valentines!!!!  Please remember that it doesn’t need to be a BIG deal.  It can be in the form of a homemade card, a small collage, a small poster, a homemade book, anything you would like.  Our intention is for you to take some time to shower your child with love, and send it to school IN SECRET.  We will keep them a secret until Valentine’s Day when we will present them to your child, in front of the class.  Feel free to add photos, sparkle, glitter, doilies, scrapbook paper, stickers…whatever you love, (please no food) and send it to school no later than Feb. 12th.   Thank you and have fun creating!!

·        Reminder about Valentine’s Day & our classroom parties.  We hope you have all had an opportunity to sign up to bring in something for our class parties.  We could not do what we do without your help!  THANK YOU!!!  Please plan to bring in your child’s VALENTINE BOX on the day of our party, Feb. 13th.  Your child can also bring in 31 valentines for classmates on Friday.  Please have your child SIGN his/her Valentines ONLY.  They will not be delivered if they are addressed to specific friends.  It is much too difficult to manage!!

·        Our classroom theme this week is Dental Health.  We are so fortunate to have our very own dentist, Dr. Anita Ford (Ben’s mom in Mrs. Barron’s class) to come in to talk to us about keeping our teeth clean and healthy on Wednesday.  We will also be talking about Groundhog’s Day on Monday.  Our new word wall word is “are.”  We now know the following words:  I, like, see, a, is, the, can, my, and, have, go, to, has, am, look, are, saw, went & are.

·        Thank you for all the food ads for this week’s centers!  We have plenty!!!

·        The Fairfield Police Dept. will be here on Feb. 26th to fingerprint and photograph your child.  These prints and pictures will be returned to you on the same day.  They are intended to be for your records ONLY and will not be kept by the police department.  If you do NOT want your child to participate in this, please print out and sign the attached form.  We will forward the link to this document in a separate email.  Please be on the lookout for it.

·        WEEKLY HOMEWORK—Please have your child complete 1-2 pages per day.  Please help and encourage your child to USE THE LINES when writing words and to write 2-3 sentences on only one topic.  Have your child complete their work in their very best handwriting, USING CORRECT LETTER FORMAITON, as this is a very important skill for Kindergarten.

·        Writing—Our writing job is the same all month.  We are NOW writing using SOUND words.  Please have your child write at least two sentences about the sounds you hear while taking a walk outside.  “Today I took a walk with my dad around the block.  We went to the creek and heard birds chirping in the trees.  We also heard the wind blowing the grass and the weeds.  Then we heard a fire engine siren far away.  I like listening to the sounds outside.”  (in Kindergarten writing of course)

·        REMINDER Please be sure that your child returns their book bag in their folder everyday.  We cannot send a new book home with them to practice reading if they did not bring their book bag to reading group.  Thank you!!

·        Upcoming dates to calendar…

o      Feb. 9-- no school in honor of Lincoln’s birthday
o      Feb. 16—no school in honor of President’s Day.
o      Feb. 27—Teacher workday, no school for students.

Thank you again for all that you do at home to support your child’s learning.  We appreciate all that you do!  Please feel free to email with any concerns or questions!  Thank you!!
